Dreams vs. Delusions: How to Know If Your Goals Are Realistic

Ever met someone who swears they’ll be a millionaire “someday” but hasn’t even figured out how to pay their rent next month? Or the guy who insists he’s going to start a business but never takes the first step?

That’s the fine line between a dream and a delusion.

So, What’s the Difference?

Dreams are big, bold, and inspiring.

They challenge us, push us out of our comfort zones, and force us to grow. They may seem crazy at first, but they’re backed by action and a plan.

Delusions, on the other hand, are just dreams with no execution.

They sound great, but nothing is being done to make them real.

How to Tell If Your Dream is Realistic

Before you chase a goal, ask yourself these four questions:

1. Is There a Clear Path to Get There?

You don’t need all the steps figured out, but is there a logical way forward? A dream should have at least a rough blueprint. If your plan sounds like “Win the lottery” or “Become famous overnight,” you’re in trouble.

2. Am I Taking Any Action?

A dream without action is just a wish. If you say you want to switch careers, but you haven’t applied for a single job or taken any courses to improve your skills, you’re not dreaming—you’re daydreaming.

3. Am I Willing to Adapt?

Successful people adjust their approach. If one way isn’t working, they find another. If you’re so set on one specific outcome that you refuse to pivot, you might be caught in delusion.

4. Has Anyone Else Done This Before?

If other people have achieved what you want, then it’s possible. You just need to learn from them and put in the work. If no one has ever done it (and it’s not because they didn’t try), your dream might need some tweaking.

How to Turn a Dream into a Reality

  1. Write it Down – Make it real. Put it on paper.
  2. Break It Down – What’s the first, smallest step you can take today?
  3. Track Your Progress – If you’re not seeing real movement, it’s time to adjust.
  4. Be Brutally Honest – Ask yourself: Am I actually doing the work, or just talking about it?

Final Thought

Dream big. Just don’t live in la-la land. A great dream + consistent action = real success.

Now, go make something happen.
